An Historic Land
Here you are in the land of Iron Age hill forts and Bronze Age cup and ring marks, Pele towers and Bastle houses. For thousands of years the land has been tilled and fought over. This is the land of the Reivers and Raiders plundering and pillaging on both sides of the Border - a harsh and often cruel place. But now peace reigns o'er all and we can survey the beauty and the sheer peace at our ease.
Around Eglingham
You may be lucky enough to watch the heron grace the Eglingham Burn or hear the curlews up on he moor, or even catch a glimpse of the deer in the woods. This is the land of big estates, halls and country houses, completely rural and unspoiled. The views and incredibly wide skies are breathtaking especially for guests who want to get away from the stress and rat race of life. Here time stands still where you can sit in the heather and think or, better still, just sit. Northumbrian hospitality is renowned and if you go for a stroll in the village people will always be glad to have a chat or 'a crack' as we say here.
The Parish Church of St Maurice is a fine Victorian church always open and welcoming to visitors. About three miles along the road in the direction of Chillingham is the Church of the Holy Trinity at Old Bewick. This is a truly magical place tucked in by the Kirk Burn sheltered by Bewick Hill with its cup and ring marks and nestling in the trees. I feel sure that this was a spiritual place long before the coming of Christianity to our area. Peace abounds here and there is an overwhelming feeling of 'safeness'.
Views of Northumberland
Journeying further on and turning to the right by the wall of Chillingham Castle Estate you go up through Hepburn Farm, past the Bastle House which was a fortified farmhouse and up the hill onto the moor. To the left is Ros Castle Fort. Climb the hill and you will have one of the most scenic views of Northumberland. You will see Haggerston Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, the haunting ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, Coquet Island, Warkworth Castle, Alnwick Castle with its famous Alnwick Garden, and then turning round you will see Chillingham Castle tucked in the trees and beyond that the Cheviot Hills and the Scottish Borders. What a wonderful view.
